Oklahoma City…

is in name a contradiction, wild west tamed
under city lights yet seeping through the cracks
in the streets. Over the flatness her avenues
stretch, but at each edge there lies a cattleman’s

view, moonlit tall grass swaying in an incessant
wind, an armadillo moseying across a pickup
truck-beaten dirt road. A newborn skyscraper’s
shadow veils the rusted pump jack prostrating

to the setting sun. A cowboy’s pointed feet jut
into a neon-lit night for a whiskey or five
downtown.  On a breeze he smells fresh cow
shit wafting from the stockyards blocks away.
